Lata

Lata is the Sanskrit word for a creeping vine, the kind that winds gently around a banyan or a temple pillar, and by extension a slender, graceful figure. It is one of the small, almost-noun names that Indian tradition wears well. Rendered लता, it lands in two easy beats, LAH-ta, as brief as a breath. The name is inseparable from Lata Mangeshkar, whose recording voice carried Hindi cinema for more than seven decades and made Lata, for a time, the most famous single syllable pair in South Asia.
