Lata

Lata is the Sanskrit word for a climbing vine — the kind that winds its way up a banyan's roots, along a temple wall, following the light without making noise about it. By extension it has always described a slender, graceful figure, the quality of moving gently and going far. Rendered लता, it lands in two quiet beats, LAH-ta, brief as an exhaled breath, and then it is over.

There is almost no way to speak about this name without speaking about Lata Mangeshkar, who died in 2022 after more than seven decades of recording — a voice so present in Hindi cinema that entire generations of Indians heard her without knowing her name and knew her name without having seen her face.
