Vasilisa arrives draped in the embroidered hem of a Russian folktale. The feminine form of Vasily, itself from the Greek basileus, "king," the name effectively crowns its bearer queenly. Generations of Russian children grew up on Vasilisa the Beautiful, the clever girl who outwits Baba Yaga with a doll in her pocket and a lantern made of bone. Those four rolling syllables feel ceremonial, almost liturgical, with a final -lisa that lands softly.
