Shinji

Faith, truth, sincerity — the kanji cluster around honesty and conviction, which makes it slightly ironic that the name's most globally famous bearer is Shinji Ikari, the reluctant pilot at the center of Neon Genesis Evangelion, a character defined by his inability to trust himself. Anime has a way of complicating the intentions of names. Footballer Shinji Kagawa brought a different energy to European pitches with Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United, steady and technically precise, the name on the back of his shirt during a period when Japanese footballers were rewriting assumptions about the game.

Two syllables move easily — the initial sh opens with a soft hush, the firm ji closes without drama. Popular through the late twentieth century in Japan, still in respectable use, it sits now at the comfortable middle distance from both vintage and current.
