Neelima

Neelima is a Sanskrit-derived abstraction from neel, the dark blue of rainclouds and sapphires, forming a name that translates as blueness itself. It has the quality of a color word elevated to a philosophical noun, the sort of abstraction Indian naming does beautifully. Rendered नीलिमा, it unspools across three even syllables, nee-LEE-ma, a long tone that suits its meaning. Used widely in India in the mid- to late twentieth century and carried into public memory by writers and actors bearing the name, including the poet Neelima Sharma. Rare outside South Asian contexts, it reads there as cool, poetic, and specific.
