Maverick

Samuel Maverick was a nineteenth-century Texas rancher, lawyer, and politician who refused to brand his cattle — partly out of opposition to the practice, partly out of negligence — and his surname soon stood for any unbranded calf wandering on the Texas range. By the 1880s, the word had passed into general American English to mean any human who would not be marked, branded, or made to belong: a maverick was someone who refused the herd.

The 1986 film Top Gun gave the word a new face — Tom Cruise's cocky Navy pilot Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, who lost his wingman, broke the rules, and won the day — and a generation of American parents who watched that film at the right age began, decades later, hearing it as a first name with ignition in it. Maverick entered the SSA top 1000 in 2003, the top 100 in 2014, and reached rank thirty-six in the most recent data — one of the fastest sustained climbs of any boys' name in the modern charting era. The 2022 sequel Top Gun: Maverick gave the name a fresh push.

Famous bearers include Maverick Carter (LeBron James's longtime business partner), and an entire generation of Maverick characters across modern media, including Drake's son Adonis Maverick. Three syllables, a hard opening M, and a K that snaps the ending shut — MAV-er-ik. The name pairs naturally with other Western-leaning siblings (Maverick and Wyatt, Maverick and Cash, Maverick and Wolf) and works less easily with classical names. Nicknames are scarce: Mav, Mavi, occasionally Rick. Outdoorsy, swaggering, unmistakably American. The name announces itself.
