Most English speakers know Matthew as something comfortable and worn, a name so thoroughly absorbed into Christian tradition that its Hebrew roots have become purely historical. Matityahu restores the full architecture of the original: four unhurried syllables, each vowel opening into the next, the whole name unfolding at a pace that feels processional rather than hurried. The meaning — gift of God — is shared with Matthew, but the experience of saying the full form is entirely different.

The name's most consequential bearer in Jewish history is Matityahu the priest, the father of the Maccabees whose refusal to offer pagan sacrifice sparked the revolt celebrated at Hanukkah.
