Aurora

Aurora was the Roman goddess of dawn, said to rise each morning from the ocean in a rose-and-gold chariot drawn by winged horses, scattering rose-colored light across the sky before her brother the sun arrived — the same goddess the Greeks called Eos, sister of Helios and Selene. The name is simply the Latin word for dawn, unchanged across two thousand years.

It surfaces in poetry and natural science in equal measure: Elizabeth Barrett Browning's Aurora Leigh, the verse novel about a poet finding her voice; the aurora borealis and australis, the polar lights that ripple green and pink above the Arctic and Antarctic; Vladimir Nabokov's Aurora; and Sleeping Beauty's Princess Aurora, the Disney version of which helped push the name into the American top twenty in the last decade. Aurora entered the SSA top 100 in 2015 and has climbed steadily, currently sitting at number sixteen. The name's modern ascent owes something to a broader vintage-celestial revival (Luna, Stella, Aurora) and something to specific cultural touchstones — Disney's animated and live-action Sleeping Beauties, the Norwegian singer Aurora Aksnes, and a small wave of celebrity Auroras born to actors and musicians in the 2010s.

Three syllables that roll like an incantation — Au-RO-ra — all round vowels and soft r's, the central o doing most of the melodic lifting. Pairs beautifully with both very celestial siblings (Aurora and Stella, Aurora and Luna) and with grounded vintage classics (Aurora Mae, Aurora Rose, Aurora Wren). Nicknames are scarce but loved: Rori, Rora, Ari. Celestial, mythological, gold-edged. A name that sounds like the first light through a curtain.
